The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; to grant to those who mourn in Zion – to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he may be glorified. They shall build up the ancient ruins; they shall raise up the former devastations; they shall repair the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations. (Isaiah 61:1-4)
For the last eight years we have had the joy of sending short-term missionaries to serve in Project 61, a ministry started by Springs of Grace Bible Church in Tulsa, OK. Project 61 is a unique youth camp that pairs God-centered urban ministry training with the opportunity for youth to reach out in the inner city.
Each morning of Project 61, the youth serving there help local coaches staff a sports camp at the Rose Bowl. The sports camp is an opportunity to show the love of Christ and share the hope of the gospel with those attending. In the afternoons and evenings the youth enjoy some crazy games and times of worship including music and Christ-exalting teaching.
All youth entering 8th-12th grade are welcome to serve at Project 61. More information about the camp can be found here.
